Catastrophic events
While on the mission to survive, there are certain catastrophic events to prepare for that are most likely to strike in the present situation and cause crisis that might need us to head out on a survival trip.
In Part 1 of this post (5 Catastrophic events to prepare for – Part 1), we’ve looked at economic collapse and natural disasters. Let’s shortly describe the last three of the possible caatastrophic events, which are a health crisis, political crisis and a social unrest.
A public health crisis
Public health emergencies are catastrophic events that often occur when an epidemic disease or a pandemic is declared. We all remember 2020, right? No matter what you think about all the Covid-19 panic around the world, the emergency was real and caused all sorts of tragedies all around the world.
When infectious diseases spread across a region or the globe, it becomes a state of emergency that affects the way you live and work.
Pandemics can lead to devastating economic and serious social disruptions.
They can slow down the economy, interrupt the education system, cause business failures, lead to chronic illnesses, affect your mental health, and increase the number of deaths in the population of the country.
Public health issues often lead to the development of long-term health issues, such as high blood pressure, digestive problems, various cancers, stroke, memory problems, social problems, and substance abuse. Public health emergencies include disease outbreaks and human-made disasters, like bioterrorism and radiation or chemical emergencies.
Catastrophic events like disease outbreaks can result from epidemics, pandemics, food poisoning, water contamination, and also parasites.
Any health crisis can and will have a damaging impact on the economy, because consumer behavior will drastically change. This will affect businesses, the agricultural sector, the family structure, the global financial system, international trade, and individuals as well.
If such a situation catches you unaware, it can seriously harm your overall health, your relationships and your finances. That is why it’s extremely important to be aware of the early warning signs, make sure everyone around the home is prepared for an upcoming crisis, and respond the right way. This will help you deal with the health emergency much more effective, hence survive it, avoid it, or at least accept its effects.
Some health crises can be prevented if you identify the warning signs in time, learn about prevention methods and adhere to them. That’s one thing that can give you hope during uncertain times and help you fight the illnesses.
The warning signs of an impending public health crisis depend on the illness or emergency that’s about to happen at a certain time. For example, some of the early symptoms of a heat-related illness are heat exhaustion, heat rash, heatstroke, sunburn, and heat cramps.
If there is a noticeable increase in the number of people suffering from any of those heat-related illnesses, it could be an indication that a more serious crisis is ensuing. If you happen to ignore the early warning signs and fail to prepare in advance, you just may have a hard time dealing with them.
Warning signs of a medical emergency will differ depending on the type of illness, but they will most probably include
prolonged chest pains,
breathing problems,
continued choking,
persistent vomiting,
sudden injuries,
continuous bleeding,
severe body aches,
and mental health issues.
Remember, the best thing you can do in case of catastrophic events is prepare for a crisis before it happens.
In catastrophic events such as these you must always seek professional advice, consult with your doctor, or go to the nearest hospital for a proper diagnosis.
Keep your local emergency number close by or memorize it so you can easily call for help in case of any emergency.
Know the general rules for dealing with certain health issues well, and adhere to them. For example, in the case of pandemics, you will have to isolate, practice social distancing, and carry out all precautionary measures. These may include avoiding physical contact, covering coughs, using face masks, sanitizing your hands, avoiding crowded areas, and improving ventilation in your home. Again, the whole world learned about it during the 2020. It was the first time I’ve personally witnessed anything on that scale, and no matter what you thought about it at the time, it felt really scary.
A public health emergency often causes stress, anxiety, and worry about the future, leading to several mental health issues. It is very important for you to mentally prepare yourself and your loved ones for it.
The best ways to do so are to only rely on trusted news sources to learn about the events to prepare for, take a break from news stories, keep in touch with your loved ones through communication devices, eat healthily, get adequate rest, take care of your physical health, talk about your emotions, and manage the overall stress. Don’t ignore this.
A political crisis
A political crisis is a problem or conflict in the function of a government that the political constitution or other fundamental governing law is perceived to be unable to resolve. [Wikipedia]
It can have serious economic, social, and psychological consequences, which are all catastrophic events per se.
Political instability often affects trade, the local currency, businesses, and also international trade. It can also force companies to close down, resulting in job losses and high unemployment rates.
Learn to identify the signs, prepare for an economic downturn caused by political instability, and cope with inevitable stress. Some of the indications of internal political instability are strikes, protests, riots, civil wars, political assassinations, coups, and an economic recession.
Primary causes of political turmoil include power struggles, a recession, price hikes, a currency crisis, an unstable economy, and hegemony or the dominance of one political group or state over the other. The ever-growing modern woke understanding of the world is a good example of how individuals and masses that desperately need to show themselves can affect the overall wellbeing of entire nations.
Then, there are mass migrations that are happening all around the west world during the last years. It doesn’t matter how you feel about it, but you must be aware that the political decisions are made about it. And economy will hurt because of them, or it already does. If situation goes out of control, it is a very believable reason for political changes that will happen, and these by themselves are sometimes enough for a serious political crisis.
The best way to prepare for a political crisis is to avoid investing primarily in a country that is approaching political chaos. If it’s your country, you will know what I mean. You also have to identify signs of political fatigue and manage socio-political stress. Don’t ever become to tightly connected to one party or another, becase changes are imminent and may cause you to overstress.
Very important in case of catastrophic events such as this: secure your finances and make sure they are not affected by political instability. Make investments solely in countries that are not at high risk and monitor the investments you’ve already made in countries that are going through political turmoil closely. You may need to cut your loses by deinvesting under price, but it can help you remain in good shape financially.
Know when you have stress caused by catastrophic events such as political unrest and deal with it ASAP. Some of the signs include sleep struggles, weight loss, obesity, and anxiety. It’s especially so if you spend half the day following the news and trying to stay up to date with the political crisis at hand.
It’s best for you to limit your intake of political news and only follow trusted news sources, practice relaxation, have balanced conversations about the current crisis, avoid certain conversations that cause anxiety, and prioritize your mental and physical health above all else.
Some of the best things you can do to maintain financial independency during political crisis are
maximize your liquid savings,
clear your debts,
manage your bills,
build a savings account,
create an emergency fund,
have multiple income sources,
and make profitable investments.
Civil and social unrest and disorder
One of the catastrophic events to prepare for that is becoming more and more important lately are civil and social unrest situations.
Civil disorder is a situation caused by a mass act of civil disobedience that disrupts a community or an organization. It is characterized by demonstrations, riots, criminal activities, strikes, unlawful assembly, and other public nuisances. Whatever the reason behind them, they will always rinse the sole structure of the world around us, especially if they reach a certain volume. This is presently the case in many countries around the world, even more so in the countries of the so-called western world, because there are many reasons limiting people in their lives. It is for sure one of the most prominent events to prepare for, simply because they’re already upon us.
Social unrest, no matter the reason, always increases uncertainty. It can lead to the destruction of property and have hostile effects on the economy overall.
Catastrophic events such as social unrest are often caused by rising social inequality, corruption, police violence, price hikes, political grievances, economic unrest, high taxes, racial tensions, ethnic tensions, food scarcity, long-standing oppression, and injustice.
Unfortunately, we’re living in times when more and more people believe that they are entitled to everything, even if they have never created anything by theselves. Some were raised up that way, some just believe it for whatever reason. Such thinking leads to scary situations when agression takes presedence over thinking, and such situations are always dangerous for the system as we know it. There have been situations like that in the past, and we all know how they ended. I’m worried, for me, my family, my grandkids.
If you are not ready for civil unrest, you will have a hard time dealing with it or protecting yourself and your loved ones. Therefore, you better know when social unrest is approaching and prepare for it as much as you can.
Look for the above-mentioned signs and start preparing to protect your health, work, finances, and family when catastrophic events such as these appen. Stay up to date with the news or avoid affected areas. If your area is affected, seek shelter elsewhere as soon as possible. Move to a safe location and make sure you have all the necessary supplies. For example, food, shelter, clean drinking water, and power sources.
Another safety measure is to avoid riots as much as possible and stay at home with all the necessary supplies.
Always prioritize your health and keep your family safe. Keep your vehicle ready in case you have to leave in a hurry. Make sure you have a survival kit, navigation kit, important documents, as well as survival and self-defense tools at hand in a dedicated bug-out bag.
Conclusion
Coping with catastrophic events successfuly is difficult if you are not prepared for them. It is so mostly because of the destructive impact they can have on your overall emotional, physical, and financial wellbeing. It is very important to learn to identify emergencies before they occur and prepare for them as much as possible. While there are more events to prepare for, the ones we discussed here are among the most believable to happen.
